OJT/Self-Paced Tutorials

Criteria to receive formal training credit for On-the-Job Training (OJT)

  1. The training must have specific learning objectives.
Here are some examples:
    1. Employee will know all the basic procedures for registering customers for library cards in Workflows.
    2. Employee will be able to handle every step of the holds handling process, from labeling of received items, to contacting the customer, to removing holds.
    3. Employee will be able to demonstrate four essentials of good telephone customer service and etiquette.
    4. Employee will know how to transfer a call, page someone, park a call, put a call on speaker, and create a conference call
  1. The training must be done in blocks of time set aside exclusively for training. (In other words, staff members do not go back and forth between learning the topic and engaging in other activities)
    1. Note: Our system allows us to give training credit in half-hour increments. If the length of the training is less than 25 minutes, credit will not be given;
    2. However, if more than one training session adds up to greater than 25 minutes when combined, credit can be given for the total of the combined sessions.
    3. For example, if you have a 15-minute presentation on a different database at each staff meeting, anyone who attends three presentations is eligible for one hour credit.
  1. The training must be scheduled and planned for in advance.
  1. The training must be mostly a learning activity, as opposed to primarily doing the work
    1. Example of coaching (not OJT): Someone fairly new is scheduled on a public service desk and has frequent questions, which an experienced employee answers.
    2. Example of on-the-job training: Someone fairly new is scheduled for training at a public service desk. Every customer interaction is reviewed with the trainer, whether the new person only observed the transaction or interacted with the customer directly.
  1. The knowledge gained must have application to improving the work performance of the employee.
    1. Departmental information sharing does not qualify
    2. Town Hall meetings and committee meetings would not normally qualify, unless there is a component of a meeting devoted specifically to training.
