Staff Development Day 2015
“Team JPL: Tell Us Your Stories”

We will announce the dates for TMS pre-registration on Friday.
Meanwhile, take a look at the workshop offerings and make your picks.

Staff Development Day 2015 (SDD15) is coming soon—Monday, April 20th, from 8:30am to 5:30pm.

The event will be held in the Main Library Conference Center and will provide 8 hours of training, including opportunities to get technology training credits.

Schedule: Main Street Conference Center doors open at 7:00am, registration packet pick-up will begin at 7:30am, and the Morning Kick-Off session will begin at 8:30am.
Our speaker this year is Nancy Dowd of EBSCO, where she has been the lead the development of LibraryAware.

Nancy is the co-author of ALA’s bestselling book, Bite-Sized Marketing, Realistic Solution for Overworked Librarians and The M Word blog. She has spoken around the world helping libraries improve their marketing and advocacy efforts.

Food: Davoli’s Catering will be setting out a full buffet breakfast for you to enjoy from 7:30-8:30.   Then, from 12:30-1:30, join your friends and co-workers for lunch on your own, exploring downtown Jacksonville and spending some quality time together.

Registration: Opening date to be announced. You will have two weeks to preregister in the Training Management System (TMS) for your three workshop sessions.

Registration for each workshop is first come, first served.  Take a look at the Workshop Schedule pictured below and pick your preferences, so you will be ready when registration opens.

Remember that SDD is mandatory for all full-time staff.  Please work with your supervisors to ensure that you are available on April 20th.

All part-time staff are invited as well but not required to attend.
  • If your part-time schedule normally has you working on Monday, you will need to attend.
  • If not and you wish to attend, work with your supervisors to allow you to attend without exceeding your 24 hour maximum for the week.
  • Schedules can be modified, with your supervisor’s concurrence, to accommodate attendance.
Volunteers:  On April 20th, we welcome volunteers to help with three sorts of tasks:
  • Staffing the Registration Tables in the morning and the Help Desk throughout the day
  • Serving as session helpers for each breakout workshop by distributing class materials, keeping time for the presenters, and distributing and collecting course evaluation
  • Giving directions on upper floors to staff people who are unfamiliar with the Main Library.
Please contact Diane Alexander DianeA@coj.net if you wish to volunteer.

Contact Mike Shell mshell@coj.net for any other questions about SDD15.

Thank you, thank you, thank you

Staff Development Day 2013 was a fine example of just the sort of system-wide teamwork, collaborative leadership and staff initiative which the day was designed to lift up and celebrate.

First: Staff and supervisors of every JPL unit organized themselves to assure customer service coverage, despite the schedule disruptions which a full Monday work day made necessary.

Second: Administrative and Support Services Team members went out to the branches on Tuesday to help catch up on weekend book drop returns and other tasks.

Third: We had over a dozen volunteers from Main Library who served as guides to the building during the day, and 30 more folks who worked as session helpers during the workshops.

Fourth: Bob Silkett, Darlene Nicholson, Tammy Crotts, Patricia Palmer, Ayshea Golden and Leila Wertman staffed the registration desks in the morning, and Diane Alexander and Tenesha Anderson were at the Help Desk for every break.

Fifth: Several people coordinated the development of the 30 breakout sessions and served as presenters, and we had a broad range of additional presenters, including guest speakers.

·         Laura Minnich – Educational Success: Susan Mankowski, Amber Holley, Julie Pactor and Cheryl Callavini
·         Michael Sullivan – Economic Success: Marshelle Berry and Anthony Williams
o   Maurice Menchan and Jennifer Simms (WorkSource)
o   Rev. Reginald Bryant (Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church) and Mary Dumbleton (FSCJ North Campus)

o   Candy Solomon and Carol Michael (Independent Living for the Adult Blind – FSCJ), Tyler Morris (Independent Living Resource Center and Mayor’s Disability Council) and Natalie Alden (Disability Rights Florida and Mayor’s Disability Council).

Sixth: We had solid, reliable support from several individuals and teams, both during the months of planning and on the day:

·         The CW Crew: “Harlem Shuffle” video.

Seventh:The Staff Development Day Committee members and advisors, who began planning in January, surprised themselves with their own smooth efficiency.  Each member took on multiple tasks, and the following is merely an overview:
